I hesitated yesterday to start this and you can bring the pitchforks to GP on 10/14 if this becomes the announcer's curse.

Beside this March being colder than Feb (by the largest margin ever?), a couple of records that could go by the wayside at PHL.

Greatest single event for March:

12.0" March 1993 Storm of the Century

19.4" (April 3-4, 1915) latest, greatest snowstorm (long shot beside today's run)

17.7" March 1941 monthly snowfall record.  (Already have an inch in the books)

Ok, with 7.6" in the books for this event at PHL.

It is the 3rd heaviest single event so late in the season.  In spite of higher amounts, I think this is a fair ranking, March 1958 is in a league of its own and April 1915 whoa.

Also we now have tied 1941 as the only year to have two 6" or more events during the month of March.

We are now tied in second place for the second snowiest March ever in PHL with 10 day still to go.

All from Carl:

Over the past (9) seasons this MAR is now the 11th month to go down as a top 10 snowiest on record. Over the past 5 yrs. Philadelphia has recorded 43.7" of snow during MAR & 39.7" in FEB.

Based on pure average the current seasonal average at Philadelphia for the pending 1991-2020 mean is 24.2".

So With the 13.5" of snow that fell from this last storm we are now up to 30.3" for the month here in Chester County Pa. This surpassed the old March record for monthly snow which was the 27.1" set way back in 1914 local records (1894 to present). Also of note the 13.5" storm represents the 4th largest March snowstorm in our history with the top 3 being - 3/20/58 - 19.0" / 3/14/93 - 16.1" and 3/11/1907 - 13.7". This month also marks the 1st time we have experienced 2 individual snowstorms that have exceeded the 10" mark during the month of March...with the storm on the 6th/7th of 11.5" making this reality. Overall our seasonal total is now up to 55.7". This is the 14th snowiest season in Chester County in our 125 seasons of record. Top 15 being

1)    1898-99    (95.0")
2)    2009-10    (86.6")
3)    1995-96    (81.9")
4)    2013-14    (80.0")
5)    1904-05    (79.7")
6)    1909-10    (76.8")
7)    1906-07    (71.8")
8)    2002-03    (61.0")
9)    1977-78    (59.8")

10)  1986-87   (59.3")

11)  1893-94   (59.2")

12)  1957-58 (58.0")

13)  1966-67 (57.0")

14)  2017-18 (55.7")

For the 2nd consecutive year MAR will end up colder than FEB, the only other time that happened at Philadelphia was 1890-91. The last three days prevented a run at the largest margin of colder which remains MAR 1984 (-3.2).

Over the 144 year period of record FEB averages 8.1 degrees colder than MAR.
