Some of the beauty of fall is its ephemeral nature......

True. All the more reason for people to stop what they are doing and take a moment to take it all in over these next few weeks. It's an amazing transformation.

Sadly, I have to bump this quote with bad news or more like bad luck. Rewind 2 weeks ago when all eyes were on Matthew and its threat to the Southeast coast. Yup, my brother in law's rental was booked for the Saturday that Matthew was barreling up the coast of FL, toward the Carolinas.  Talk about bad luck.

I was able to talk 12 people out of traveling down to Corolla, NC that Saturday as the Hurricane was moving in. They were hesitant at first, especially seeing how money had already been paid for the rental. When I woke up on Sunday morning and saw the obs. of an 80 mph gust in Duck, NC and 6-12 inches of rain overnight I knew I made the right call.

Luckily, they did have insurance on the trip but the rental agency and insurance company were warning my brother in law that it was too soon to tell what could be reimbursed because mandatory evacuations were never issued (this is what they were told initially). Anyway, the Outer Banks were battered, flooded and without power for days. It was no place for "vacationers" to be and Dare County had restrictions for 2-3 days after the storm keeping non-residents off the Outer Banks. Sad thing is the rental agency led him to believe that they'd be able to get into the rental "soon" and that was B.S. as Sunday turned to Monday and Monday turned to Tuesday. Come to find out their rental was inhabitable due to neighborhood flooding and no power.

We went with a plan B and spent a few days in Williamsburg, VA (my family alone) before my brother in law decided to rent out another house a few blocks inland in Rehobeth Beach, DE starting midweek.  We made the best of things. Lots of stress and aggravation for my brother in law, but hopefully he enjoyed the few days we all spent together.

Here are some pics from the days in VA and then DE. As expected in the wake of the Hurricane the sky was blue as could be.

Painting new (and larger) snow boards. Last year had smaller snow boards of a PVC material, doesn't rot but a little too small. So, this year larger squares, and a wood that is more resistant to rot (I hope). I told the paint guy at the store what I was doing and he recommended an exterior primer (water based) that is supposed to be somewhat water resistant (Valsperio?). Will see how the paint lasts the winter. Did not want the hassle of an oil based primer. One coat so far. Thoughts on adding a second coat? Have enough paint left for this.

Looks good to me. I want to do the same thing in the next month or so. What type of wood did you use and what dimensions?

I don't see how a 2nd coat would hurt, if you have extra especially.

A got three 2 ft by 2 ft by 1/2 inch plywood squares from Lowes, don't recall which, and I purchased the squares about three or four months ago and only now got around to painting. Don't recall what type of wood and I no longer have the receipt, but I'd say it was either birch or oak. I hope that what I got was an exterior grade of plywood squares, but that may not have been possible or else too expensive. But the guy in the lumber department was very helpful when I explained to him what I wanted the squares for. They were not expensive, so I bought an extra one.

Will add a second coat in the next couple of days.

By the way, the last wooden snow board I had was some scrap given me by a friend who painted for me, probably pine, and less then 1/4" thick. Even if he used oil based primer, it started to rot after one year. I got two years out of it before moving to the smaller pvc scraps given me by my carpenter.
