Rainshadow
Now that December is in the books, I just did a quick eyeballing (paging Carl) and the largest fall from December torch I found was Dec 1911 (41.5) to Jan 1912 (25.4). Again a quick eyeball, 40.0F plus Decembers were followed in PHL by a January that averaged in the 20s three times, 30s seventeen times and 40s four times.
colonel_kurtz
Happy New Year Tony! Looks like twenty five total 40(+) DEC's, yep 1911-12 would be the largest turnaround from a toaster DEC 25 Subsequent JAN's averaged 35.4, long term period record JAN average is 32.8
Rainshadow
Carl, Happy New Year and thank-you!!! Quite the coincidence that the numerical value in the drop in temp exactly matched the monthly snowfall.
colonel_kurtz
Carl, Happy New Year and thank-you!!! Quite the coincidence that the numerical value in the drop in temp exactly matched the monthly snowfall. This DEC was so ridiculous we only need a 35.0 (+2) JAN to surpass the 1911-12 "fall from Torch"
Rainshadow
Near normal Jan, and we may set the fall from torch record.
Rainshadow
With one more day to go, PHL 33.8F, +0.8 for month, today will nudge it higher...but it looks like we may have a new fall from torch winner.

I betcha there were some outlooks that were much colder than that.

WeatherOrNot
So what was the real tally for the average temp & departure from norm for Jan? I apparently missed Tom's usual posting with the month-end stats And, with this weekend in the outlook, any guesses on where Feb ends? greg ralls
January was 1.2 degrees warmer than average, February is 6.3 degrees warmer than average, but the next few days will take a bite out of that warmth.
famartin
To date, winter 2015-2016 ranks second warmest on record with average temp of 42.4. Record to date is 1931-1932, 44.4. Third place is 1889-1890, 42.3.

WeatherOrNot
Thanks, all! Not surprising the winter itself is so warm to average given how warm December was. Feb, it'll be interesting to see where the numbers fall this weekend and where that places our average to date versus the warm start. Tony: Would it be inappropriate to break into a rendition of "You Are My Sunshine?"

Eh, your expectations are usually good enough At least you're allowed to be wrong now! (And glad you're still on the boards!)
dryslotted
What I expect and what actually happens may not be one and the same. I was reminded of this constant at the 19th hole of last year's golf outing...
