median at PHL over the past 10yrs is 21.1" so clearly feast or famine situation, 80's were more consistently mediocre seasons

For the period I included, the 11 80's winter median was 17 versus the last 11 winters which is 19.5.  So, yeah, feast or famine.  A lot of famine.

relative to average the N & W burbs did slightly better during the 80's while PHL has performed significantly better over the past 10yrs.

Guess it depends on what area of the NW suburbs...

ABE's 11 1980's winters:  Mean 30.1, Median 26.0

ABE's last 11 winters:  Mean 34.8, Median 32.5

from a 10 yr. seasonal standpoint:

% of mean snow at ABE, 1980's - 94%, past 10yrs. - 108%

% of mean snow at PHL / Nat'l Park, 1980's - 91%, past 10yrs. - 132%

if you look at the 10 season's during the 1980's (1979/80 - 1988/89) vs. the past 10 seasons at ABE you'll find the median snow was actually higher in the 80's, 30.2" vs. 28.3"

Indeed.  I suppose I count 89-90 as an 80's winter since it had the same theme (cold dry or warm wet) and 03-04 seemed to fit the last 10 years winters pattern with a KU.

Interesting Ray.  More snow recently but warmer temperatures. Thats a nice trade-off.  Our snow luck started turning in 1993 since then we've had our share of snow and big storms. With a few exceptions 1968 through 1992 was the opposite we only had a handful of 10"+ KU storms (2 in 78, 79, 83, 2 in 87)

The true snow drought was March 1983-February 1992... check out these horrible averages:

Nov - 0.7

Dec - 1.6

Jan - 6.8

Feb - 4.4

Mar - 2.1

Apr - 0.4

Total - 16.0
