Eruption of Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha'apai and its effects on weather

Recommended Posts

I know these scientific journal papers are yawnable for most, but for those who care it’s an interesting read about the recent volcanic eruption: https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2022GL099381

In short, there’s preliminary evidence of short-term surface warming (temporary exacerbation of existing warming) due to excess water vapor. More importantly though - the possibility of a temporary poleward shift in the TPV/storm track. Too early to tell right now though.

Only in this climate change era can a volcanic eruption lead to more warming instead of at least temporarily cooling us off.  :(

Yeah it will be interesting to see what happens, but from what I understand the warming is driven by water vapor into the stratosphere. They said it would it enter 10 hPa within 9months, a “broader region” within 18-24months, and the lower strat in a few months.
