Lakewood/Brick March 14-15 Brush Fire

I followed this brush fire, writing about it in my blog. Ended up at about 172 acres burned, two commercial buildings destroyed, 29 houses damaged with destroyed out buildings and fencing. The NJFFS, contract aircraft, and mutual aid did a great job containing this fire in horrible fire weather. In the first two blog articles, start from the bottom and scroll up for the latest. It may be counterintutitive, but if someone only has a couple of moments, they are reading the latest information.

I have tried three times to embed a facebook video from the NJFFS and have failed.  I am sorry, any suggestions on how to do this welcome, I put in a support request using the support link. I tried a couple of times using the embed link at the top and once just copying the code. Here is the the link to the post with the video from the NJ Forest Fire Service.

Here are the links to my blog articles, a lot of stuff there. The post on March 15th AM has a 25 minute video of fire footage with some shots aircraft working the fire.

Yeah it was too windy to think it was a controlled burn.  The rain tomorrow will help for a little while.

Tony, I believe but am not certain that the NJ Forest Fire Service suspended controlled or prescribed burns. The Forest Service was definite in saying that the cause was not prescribed burn. Tyler

There was a smell of smoke in the area, I was kind of hoping they were prescribed burns.

According the NJ Forest Fire Service, there were rumors on social media that the Lakewood fire was caused by a prescribed burns. So, in their last three press releases about the fire they were adamant that it was not a prescribed burn. No cause released. As I understand it, prescribed burning season ended on March 15, but could be extended.

I am not surprised you smelled smoke. How far are you from Lakewood?

Interesting. The fire in Lakewood/Brick burned east from the point of origin, as you may know. From what I saw from the fire footage, it did generate a lot of smoke. So, smoke plumes are more affected by upper air patterns, which might be different from surface winds?

Yes, there were a few controlled burns near you last week. They suspended controlled burns on Friday through the weekend and the Red Flag conditions on Sunday into Monday.

Yes, the more I thought about and got my days straight, I think it was last Wednesday (the 10th) when we had the onshore flow was probably the day I was smelling smoke, so not the Lakewood one.

Tony, I listed prescribed burns conducted by the New Jersey Forest Fire Service on March 10 in my blog, here is the link. Tyler
