Things to do near Allentown

I'd like to take my wife and four kids (all teenagers) to go for a one-hour hike at Hawk Mountain. Since it's a two and a quarter hour drive from my house in Delaware, it would be good if I could combine the hike with other stuff to see or do in the area, maybe around Allentown or Quakertown. Ordinarily, I'd just make it a long hike, but I'm a bit anemic lately and can't take any moderate trails without huffing and puffing.

Anybody have anything that they can recommend? I really know very little about the area. Thanks for your help!!!

Late replying here but living in Berks County (albeit the other end of the county), feel like I should chime in.  These are more Berks ideas as opposed to Allentown itself.

On Sunday afternoons near Hawk Mountain the WK&S Railroad runs 40 min train rides - pretty scenic.  www.kemptontrain.com.  Also remember Hawk Mountain isn’t free admission.  If you do ever feel like a longer hike there are numerous hikes to choose from  starting from Hawk Mountain and you can include the Pinnacle, a really impressive lookout for being in Berks County.

Cabelas is a great suggestion. Even if you don’t want to shop, there’s plenty to see - you can spend a solid hour there just looking around.  Russell Stover has a candy/chocolate store in the same shopping area and they have good ice cream - nice place to stop.

The Reading Fightin Phils and LV iron pigs are great minor league baseball experiences (I’d say it’s hard to beat the atmosphere at Reading) but if you’re going this weekend, neither of them are home.

Crystal Cave near Kutztown is relatively close to Hawk Mountain and a cool experience if you haven’t explored a cave.  Right near Kutztown I’d recommend Saucony Creek Brewing Company if you like local Breweries.  West Reading has a few cool breweries also, but that’s around 40 min south of Hawk Mountain area.  Touring Yuengling brewery up in Schuylkill County was another good idea.

Hope one of those ideas helps!
